I’m having one of those days.
You’ve probably had them too…
When you have too much to do, and too little time to do it.
It started with a fitful night of sleep
A morning argument with a family member that I blamed myself for
Things took longer than anticipated
And are not going according to plan
In family, work, and life
I talked to a crying friend
Tasks slipped further down the to-do list
Things to do around the house
Many parenting loose ends
Trying to figure it all out
A “quick” trip to the grocery store
I couldn’t find what I needed
Asked for help
Waited even longer
Went to a second store for the crucial ingredient
Back home again
But now it’s early evening
And the day is almost done
How to get back on track?
I did something counterintuitive but not counterproductive.
Anytime you’re overwhelmed with family or life…
Follow these directions:
Make yourself a cup of tea
Sit down in a comfy spot
Curl up with a blanket if you like
Hold your warm mug close
Set your timer for five minutes.
Close your eyes
Tune in to your breathing
Sink into your body
Breathe in light and energy
Breathe out the worry and stress
For years I’ve wanted a meditation practice.
But I just couldn’t seem to find the time.
Now I just do a 5-minute practice whenever I need it.
On days like today
When things are falling apart,
It only takes 5 minutes to put myself back together.
I’d love to hear what you do for yourself when you feel overwhelmed
I read and respond to everything in the comments section.
After reading the blog today, do you want more parenting support from me and meet similar parents?
You and I can personally talk in there if you’re struggling to figure out how to talk to your child.
Ive recently been feeling overwhelmed too. Have also started to take breaks…with a cuppa under the verandah by myself looking at the sea or sky or staring at the horizon. I also go for pedivures/ manicures as a way to treat myself.
I do the cuppa too, plus a lighted candle. The scent of matches makes me feel safe.
Sometimes when I feel too upset I put on my favourite music and dance, slowly or crazy or whatever my body needs.
Cecilia, I love your posts! They always seem to come at a time when I need them most.
When I’m feeling overwhelmed I call on my faith and say a quick prayer. I start with gratitude and thanks, which puts me back on a good path. Then I ask for peace amidst the overwhelm. I close my eyes and concentrate on feeling my feet on the floor, to ground myself in the present – this helps put the brakes on any catastrophising about the future. As you say, it’s totally counter-intuitive to drop your agenda but so worth it!
Thank you for your blogs and encouragement

In addition to what you have said, I listen to my favourite song, sometimes sing that with karaoke 😊
Yes!!! I’m doing that today… On the couch… Turning on the TV for a show for me… then back to it.
