One state is “fight or flight”; the other is “open, connected, and resilient”.
We talked to Dr. Daniel Siegel about these 2 different brain states. Here’s what he said.

To shift back into my “Yes Brain”, I exercise, go outside, or talk to a friend. What do you do?
Definitely breathe. And stop talking. That’s the tough one. My preventative maintenance is yoga and meditation every day so that I hopefully avoid this pitfall as much as possible.

I take a deep breath, realize I need to own my own upset, get physically down to the child’s level, connect with them through looking into their eyes, and listen to what they are saying.
